If the reporting pack depends on repeated exports, spreadsheet fixes and one person who knows how it works, there is room to improve it. I build reporting workflows that bring the right information together and make it easier to prepare, check and use.
Start with the decisions your reports need to support. The work can cover management accounts, budgets and forecasts, cash flow, board reporting or operational measures. We can improve the current setup or connect new tools where they meet the requirement.
Work directly with Stephen Mitchell. Liverpool based, supporting businesses remotely across the UK, with occasional on-site visits by arrangement.
Does preparing the report take longer than using it?
A useful reporting process gives people a consistent view of performance and makes the preparation and review steps clear.
Month-end means rebuilding the same spreadsheets
Exports need formatting, figures are copied between files and recurring adjustments depend on someone remembering each step.
HOW I CAN HELP
Map the preparation process and automate suitable data collection and transformations, with visible checks and exception handling.
Cash flow sits apart from the management accounts
Profit, expected receipts, payments and funding requirements are tracked in separate models, making the overall position difficult to explain.
HOW I CAN HELP
Connect the agreed inputs into a reporting and forecasting model, including invoice-finance requirements where relevant.
Different teams work from different numbers
Accounting, sales and operational systems each hold part of the picture, and reports use inconsistent definitions or refresh dates.
HOW I CAN HELP
Agree measures and ownership, connect the required sources and make refresh timing and reconciliation part of the workflow.
WHAT YOU RECEIVE
Reports built around how your business is managed
01
An agreed reporting pack
The measures, layouts, reporting periods and supporting detail your stakeholders need, with clear definitions and ownership.
02
Connected, checked inputs
Supported APIs, connectors or controlled imports, with scheduled or on-demand refresh, reconciliations and visible exceptions.
03
A process the team can maintain
Review steps, user training and handover notes, with an agreed starting point for measuring time, effort and reliability.
PRACTICAL DELIVERY
Use AI where it helps the reporting process
AI can help organise information, draft commentary or answer questions using approved data. Calculations, source references and review controls still need to be clear. I also consider conventional automation and improvements to the existing software where they suit the task.
I have built cash-flow models with integrated P&L reporting and invoice-finance requirements. My work also includes AI agents connected to Xero to extract accounting information for stakeholder reports, and custom API integrations with Xero and other software.
An agreed monthly scope can cover new measures, forecast changes, data-quality checks, integration maintenance and further training. The aim is to keep the reporting useful as the business, team and systems change.
We agree deliverables, responsibilities and fees before work starts.
PLANNING THE WORK
Questions before we start
Do we need a new finance system or dashboard tool?+
Not necessarily. We start by reviewing the reports, source data and existing tools. A better process or a connection between current systems may meet the requirement.
Can you improve reports from systems other than Xero?+
Yes. The service is platform-independent. I assess the available APIs, connectors, exports and import options for your systems before agreeing the design and refresh arrangements.
Will our reporting be live?+
Refresh can be scheduled, on demand or more frequent where the sources support it. We agree what is useful and achievable, and make the reporting date and refresh status clear.
How will we know whether the work has helped?+
We agree a baseline before delivery, such as preparation time, manual steps, reporting date or recurring errors. We then compare the revised process with that starting point.
THE FIRST CONVERSATION
Which report takes too much work to prepare?
Tell me who uses the report, where its data comes from and which steps take the most time. A phone or Teams call can help establish a practical first improvement.
